Particulate Phase

Electrostatic Precipitators

Electrostatic Precipitation systems have been used since the late 19th Century to clean the particulate (smoke and grease) phase of kitchen extract emissions. The process electrically charges pollutants to one potential and then collects them on a surface with the opposite electrical potential.

Purified Air’s ESP range can remove particulate down to sub-micron (0.01 micron) size. Filter efficiency of 98% is attained during a single pass through the ESP, based on the charging of particles by an ionisation section. These particles are then trapped on the collector plates in the collector cell with larger particulate in the air stream removed by the pre-filter. Lastly the air stream passes through an after-filter to prevent re-entrainment and provide good air distribution.

Purified Air’s ESP range is the only system specifically designed to operate in kitchen extract systems. We began installing equipment in to kitchen extract systems twenty years ago. At first we bought units from manufacturers who made products for use in industry, primarily for the removal or welding fume and oil mist. These products were usable but not entirely suited to kitchen extract systems. In 1995 we realised that in order to service the market properly we needed to design and produce our own range of ESP equipment developed specifically for use in kitchen extract systems.

We have a policy of continuous improvement and the last major overhaul of our equipment was in 2006. To date Purified Air has more than 4,000 systems installed in kitchen extract applications.

Additional Information

Please browse the information below.

  • The Facts About Electrostatic Precipitators

    • Highly efficient – removing particles down to sub-micron size.
    • Manufactured from metal components which can be cleaned rather than needing to be replaced.
    • Uniform pressure loss / resistance.
    • Units specifically designed for use in kitchen environments and feature a large sump to collect the grease.
    • Reliable established technology.
    • Purified Air’s system is modular so it is capable of dealing with all air flow levels.
  • Maintenance

All components must be washed regularly in hot water with chemicals or detergent to remove contaminants. Purified Air prefer to exchange component parts with cleaned ones, taking the dirty ones back to their factory, where they can be cleaned for future exchange.
